Please Help to Advocate for Seniors in Long Term Care

Eagle Park facility, Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

On the afternoon of Saturday November 23rd at 3.50 p.m. in another unsettling incident occurred at the Eagle Park facility in Qualicum Beach B.C. This incident involves Eileen Wicks' privacy and security.

I phoned Eileen, to the private phone in her room. The call was answered by an older man with a very gruff voice. I tried to converse with the individual, after a while I realized that he was a resident, in Eileen’s room, on her phone. I asked the man to hang up the phone, I heard the phone drop and could still hear music on her TV.

For three and a half hours I tried to contact Eileen, Eagle Park and staff by phone at various numbers, to ensure that Eileen was okay, with no response.

At 7 .30 p.m. I phoned Eileen again, and her phone had been re- connected. During the past few weeks about one in four of our phone calls have been interrupted; usually Eileen has to say ‘hold on, there is someone coming into my room again’.

On the morning of Tuesday November 26th 2024, I arrived at 9.00 a.m. to visit my wife Eileen, as usual she was waiting for me, just inside the locked door. When we walked toward Eileen’s room, we were met by a female resident removing her dark green wool sweater. She handed it to Eileen and said, “I want you to have this, I won’t need it, I’m going to shoot myself, I hate it in here”.

We walked into Eileen’s room and observed smeared blobs of fecal matter on the floor. I cleaned this up with a damp facecloth, and asked Eileen if she could show me the bottom of her shoes. I cleaned the poop off one shoe, and walked out of the room to see a male resident walking down the corridor, with his pants and underwear around his knees. It appeared that from his bare bum that he had possibly soiled himself.

I had the wet shoe in my hand when we met with Ms. Philbrook, the facility manager. We explained what had just happened within a ten-minute time frame.

Is this an acceptable way for Eileen, or any senior to live?
